Chapter Eight
Oliviaâs words fell like raindrops, almost silent in the hushed evening. But in them, muted though it was, Gabe heard her unspoken desperation to be free of the longtime load of guilt sheâd been carrying. He sent a silent prayer heavenward for the right words to offer this precious woman.
âI think He expects you to trust that He had and still has it all under control, to rest assured that He has a plan, even though itâs one you may never understand.â Gabe felt as if he was treading on shaky ground. He was no Bible scholar, no expert on the thoughts of God. But helping Olivia understand that she couldnât keep blaming herself for the heartbreak of her past was like a physical need inside him. This beautiful womanâs sadness reached in and gripped his heart so strongly it scared him.
âContinue, Gabe. Please?â Her trusting silver-gray eyes gazed into his and he knew he had to keep going.
âEither you believe God is in control of everything, or Heâs not in control at all. Thereâs no halfway with trust.â He had to get this right, had to help her understand. âEither you believe God does what is best for us or...â
Gabe deliberately let it hang, praying that sheâd finally absolve herself of the blame. But Olivia wasnât there yet.
âIt sounds too easy to just blame it on Godâs will,â she murmured.
âNot blame. Trust.â Gabeâs emotions were running wild. He couldnât stay so close to her, but he couldnât walk away, either. Heâd sort out these crazy reactions later; now he needed some space between them. He rose. âThe past, as painful as it was, happened. You canât change it. But you can change your future.â
âHow?â she demanded with a glare.
Typical of this organized woman. She needed a plan, an organized, detailed strategy. But most of the time life didnât have one.
âTrust,â he said gently, watching as the words penetrated. âStop being afraid.â
She was silent for a long time. Gabe glanced at his watch. It was after one in the morning and he had a full riding day tomorrow. He should get home. And yet he was loath to leave and end these special heart-sharing moments with Olivia.
He was about to say good-night when she spoke.
âIs trust how you recovered from your divorce, Gabe?â
There was no malice in Oliviaâs question, but in his head her words condemned his self-righteous advice, because even after all these years he still could not get past Eveâs perfidy. Though she was no longer alive, his anger at her would not abate. It was a familiar ache. Too familiar. Why couldnât he forget her?
Gabe did not want bitter thoughts of Eve to taint this special new relationship with Olivia, so he brushed it off with a glib response.
âIâm still working on the trust part. Maybe I always will be.â He cleared his throat. âI need to get home and you need your rest. Good night, Olivia.â He turned to walk away, but suddenly Olivia was there beside him, touching his arm.
